This is the story of Stanley Dabernath, zombie. A regular guy who dies, is brought back to life as a ghastly walking cadaver, and becomes the international sensation hailed by the press as The Amazing Mr. Corpse. Fame! Wealth! Groupies! Despite his ghoulish appearance, Stanley finds himself living the dream.
But in many ways, it’s harder to be a celebrity than a zombie. The suits behind Project Second Chance want to tell him how to behave in public. It’s difficult to enjoy a simple restaurant meal in peace. There’s constant pressure coming at him from all sides–not to mention that many people consider him a vile blasphemy that should be erased from existence.

So I’m bidding on a copy of this book, one of several I had watched, when I noticed something odd. This from the item description:
“This beautiful edition published by Delirium Books is a PC copy from a run of only 250 signed and numbered copies. This book is unread in new condition. PC copies are identical to the limited edition in every way, coming from the same batch of books as the limited, except the letters PC are entered instead of a number.”
Now, I’m no collector; in fact, I just wanted to read the darn thing since it is one of the few I haven’t been able to get my hands on. But I’ve never heard of such a thing, and of course a Google of PC copy leads to a lot of nothing helpful. [Checked at horror mall, and I don’t even get a hit on the original release. Must have sold out quickly.]
So I let it get by me, thinking it sounded nothing but fishy?

It stands for Personal Copies. (Which means that “PC Copies” means “Personal Copies Copies,” but you’ll still hear it that way all the time.)
So when a book is a limited edition of, say, 250 numbered copies, there are extra copies marked “PC.” My author copies aren’t part of the 1-250 numbered run, and the publisher also has their own copies. There are also extras made in case any get damaged, and sometimes other copies for reviewers, etc.
It’s not unusual for PC copies to show up on eBay. It would be considered kind of sleazy for a publisher to sell them at full price. It’s the exact same book, but for a true collector they wouldn’t have nearly the same value as a numbered copy.
That said, though I don’t want to dissuade anybody from bidding on my books, THE SINISTER MR. CORPSE is doing to be my debut “self-published as an e-book” title in early 2011…

So then, the one I’m watching now says “PC DAMAGED.” This would be:
a) One of the PC copies specifically earmarked to replace damaged items
b) A hideously deformed PC copy that they bound anyway
c) Another really good reason to wait for the digital release

Could be any of them! Although “damaged” often simply means “not perfect.” It doesn’t necessarily mean that somebody spilled acid on it or anything.

When you’re down, there’s nothing quite like the feeling of getting a good deal on an oop signed first edition of one of your favorite novels of the year to give you a bit of a lift!
I did get an extra chuckle when I saw my comment from last November regarding the legitimacy of a PC copy, only to have ended up with another one. Or could it have been the same one, come home to daddy?

I want to read this badly. I don’t have a Kindle. Is there a paperback format? I have googled to the end of google and nothing.

So far, the only print edition has been a hardcover edition that sometimes shows up on eBay. I’m planning for a paperback edition of MR. CORPSE (and several other titles) “soon,” but I don’t have a schedule yet.

You can get a Kindle reader app for just about any device you use. I have one on my computer, one on my android phone and my daughter reads most of her books on her iPad Mini.
There’s never a reason to go Strand-less!
